Dan Savage: It Will Get Better

Tragedy at Rutgers

I'm just sick about this terrible incident that occurred at Rutgers University. Tyler Clementi, a sensitive and talented gay student at Rutgers, died by suicide after his roommate and another classmate streamed an intimate encounter Tyler had with another man on the Internet. It never ceases to amaze me how young people are so cavalier with posting private information about others on the web. After learning what his roommate (Dharun Ravi) and his friend (Molly Wei) did, Tyler was so disheartened that he died by suicide. It breaks my heart that such a talented and promising young person felt so disheartened and helpless that he took that action. That's why it's important for all of us to support Dan Savage's project to post a video on YouTube saying that if you're young and gay, it will get better. I plan do post a video as soon as I get a working camera again. My camera's LCD screen broke a few weeks ago, and I have a new one ordered.

My condolences to Tyler's family and friends who must be going through a terrible time. I hope that it's some comfort for them to know how many of us are thinking of them and join them in their grief.
