4 down, 46 to go

Vermont became the fourth state to legalize gay marriage today. Way to go Vermont!

After the passage of Proposition 8 in California last November, it seemed like we were in for a bad period when it comes to equal civil rights. However, Iowa and Vermont make me optimistic. Let's hope that other states will soon follow the great four of Vermont, Iowa, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

3 down, 47 to go

The ban on gay marriage in Iowa was ruled unconstitutional today in a unanimous decision by the Iowa Supreme Court. Iowa joins Massachusetts and Connecticut as the third state with legal gay marriage. New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Vermont offer civil unions. After the passage of Proposition 8 last November, California allows domestic partnerships only.

I think that the Iowa decision is particularly important because it shows a growing acceptance of gay marriage in the Midwest.

I'm now a huge fan of Iowa. Neil grew up there (he's completely corn fed), and now gay marriage is legal there. Kudos to Iowa!
